Optimising your title tags is one of the fundamental precepts of on-page SEO. You can see the title tag at the top left of your browser window when you view any web page. It is also used as the clickable headline text on search engine results pages (SERPS).
The title tag is included within the head section of a page's HTML code as shown below:

For best results, consider the following guidelines when constructing your title tags:
- Title tags should focus primarily on the main keyword you wish to rank for by including the keyword at the start of the tag. In the case above, the main keyword is:
Dry Cleaning Services.
- If appropriate, one or two additional keywords may also be targeted. This can be effective where the additional keywords are closely related to the main keyword.
In the case above, the additional keywords concentrate on regional variations, giving the possibility to rank for the following terms: Dry Cleaning Coventry, Dry
Cleaning Services Coventry, Dry Cleaning West Midlands, Dry Cleaning Services West Midlands.
- The title tag needs to be clearly aligned with the page content so it's important that the subject matter of your page has also been optimised for maximum effect.
- Title tags should be limited to around 65 characters including spaces and punctuation. If your tag is longer than this your description will get cut off in the
search engine results and this may negatively affect your click-through rate.
- Don't just focus on the SEO implications of your title tag. Wherever possible think of your title as an advert (like Google AdWords) whose job is to attract
the maximum number of visitors.
- Resist the temptation to add you business name indiscriminately to all your title tags. Reserve your business name for use on pages such as About Us and Contact Us.
- Make sure you create unique and individualised title tags for all the pages of your site based on the principles above.
