Alt Tags and SEO

Alt tags allow you to add text snippets within your HTML code to describe images on your website. Search engines, cannot see images - so the alt tag helps them understand what the image represents.

Alt tags do have a role to play in search engine optimisation and although it may only be a minor factor it is important to ensure that your alt tags are optimised. In many cases, the images on your website will help to reinforce your themes and keywords, and the appropriate use of keywords within alt tags may be enough to boost your rankings. Alt tags are also helpful for visually impaired users who rely on screen readers to browse the web.

Optimising your alt tags is especially important if any images on your site function as links and is vital if your images are part of the site navigation system.

BONUS TIP:

If your site currently uses images as part of the navigation scheme consider changing to a text based navigation system. Text based navigation makes your site more visible to the search engines and will also make it easier for you to update your website in the future.

As mentioned above, use your keywords within alt tags, but keep your descriptions simple and don't repeat your keywords unnecessarily. If possible, use your keywords within the image name as well. For example:

<img src="liverpool-football-shirts.jpg" alt="Liverpool football shirts" />

Optimising your images and alt tags in this way could also increase the visibility of your images in a Google images search which could bring you some extra traffic for your efforts.
